Joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which an orthopaedic surgeon replaces damaged or diseased joints and replaces them with a metal, plastic, or ceramic joint, also called a prosthetic joint or prosthesis.
There are different kinds of joints in the body, and the prosthesis will act in the same way as a natural joint. For instance, knees are hinged joints that can bend and straighten, while hips are ball and socket joints, in which the rounded end of one bone fits into the hollow area of the other bone.
Knee joints are hinged joints.
Hip joints are ball-and-socket joints.
